Project 1: Arriving to Ireland
Project 2: Dublin tour 1
GREAT FAMINE IN DUBLIN
1. What do the sculptures in fron of the Custom House represent? Where are they walking to?
The sculpture is a commemorative work dedicated to those Irish people forced to emigrate during the 12th century Irish Famine. They are walking to another place, they are leaving Ireland.
2. Why does the memorial panel mention Canada?
It mentions Canada because those people were refugees in Canada, particularly in Toronto. This canadian city received twice the torontonians that they had; so they had 2/3 of the citziens that were Irish.
3. Did the famine affect everyone the same?
A big part of the irish people were affected, but there was a little part was affected on a different way. The people who just had potato and milk to eat were basically the ones that had the biggest point on this issue. They didn’t have enough money to buy any other food, and when the crack of the potato appeared, they started to get diseases. Due to this fact, they started to die. On the other side, the richest people who owned lands and had lots of money were obviously not affected on the same way. That kind of people suffered the consequences because they didn’t have the opportunity to rent the land to the lessfortunate Irish people, so they lost money.
4. What are the so-called ships?
That ships are places were the people affected by the famine stayed. They lived there and because of their situation, they died on the ships. That’s why they are called coffin ships, because coffin is the object were the dead people rests. On that ships, the people with diseases also spread them so more people died.
5. How did you feel after seeing the sculptures?
The sculptures are breathtaking. The artist did a really good job because you can see the pain that they feel and how tired they are. If they were real people, they would look like homeless. I believe those sculptures are really good.

EPIC (THE IRISH EMIGRATION MUSEUM)
1. What are the origins of the
museum (building)? Who was the designer? Why and when was it built?
EPIC tells the moving and unforgettable
stories of those who left the island of Ireland, and how they influences and
shaped the world. EPIC embraces the past and future with 1,500 years of Irish
history and culture housed in its atmospheric vaults. The world’s only fully
digital museum, experience this breath-taking story in State-of-the-art
interactive galleries, complete with Touch screens. Motion sensor quizzes and a
feast of powerful audio and video that bring Irish history to life.
2. What have you learnt about the
reasons why people had to migrate?
Because the plantations of
potatoes have a bacteria and the Irish people can’t eat the potatoes and
because of that they don’t have to much food and many of them earned Money from
potato plantations, then many of them became very poor. And for all this people
left Ireland.
3. What were the main
consequences of the migration for Ireland? And for the countries who received
them?
In Ireland the consequences
were very catastrophic for Irish because of the bacteria had had the potato,
why many people died of hunger or many of them migrated. The consequences for
the countries why received them were that there were many people and they didn’t
have jobs for everyone and that is why people hated the Irish in some way.
